Cosmi: The Italian Semi-Automatic That Became a Legend
In the world of fine firearms, few names are as distinctive as Cosmi.
Its story began at the end of the nineteenth century in the hills of Montefeltro, where Rodolfo Cosmi, a passionate hunter and self-taught craftsman, began repairing and building shotguns with extraordinary mechanical intuition. The company traces its origins to this period, when Rodolfo began creating his first guns around 1890; in 1895, driven by passion and necessity, he famously built a gun for himself using spare parts from an old shotgun and even the shaft of an umbrella.
From those humble beginnings came one of the most original firearms ever conceived: the Cosmi semi-automatic shotgun. Rodolfo Cosmi did not simply want to build another gun; he wanted to solve a technical challenge. His idea was to combine the elegance, safety and visual appeal of a break-open shotgun with the speed and practicality of a semi-automatic. After years of study, calculations and experience in the field, the Cosmi semi-automatic emerged as a completely different concept from anything else on the market.
The first mature examples of the Cosmi semi-automatic appeared in the early twentieth century, with many historical sources indicating 1926 as the year in which Rodolfo Cosmi presented his first prototype. The invention was later protected internationally, including by a US patent issued in 1931. In 1936, the company moved to Ancona, where the Cosmi name became increasingly associated with Italian craftsmanship, mechanical refinement and bespoke gunmaking.
The genius of the Cosmi lies in its architecture. Unlike conventional semi-automatic shotguns, the Cosmi combines a break-open action with a magazine housed inside the stock, giving the gun an unmistakable profile, excellent balance and a remarkable sense of elegance. This design allows the shooter to open the gun, inspect it easily and handle it with the confidence and familiarity of a traditional break-action firearm, while still benefiting from semi-automatic operation.

Over the decades, the Cosmi semi-automatic became much more than a hunting gun. It became a symbol of Italian mechanical art. Each gun is made with a level of care that belongs to the world of fine bespoke firearms: selected materials, precision machining, hand fitting, hand finishing, engraving and personalisation. The official Cosmi description underlines that the gun is made from more than 100 mechanical components working in synchrony, each produced from solid metal and then carefully finished.
Its appeal has always been both technical and emotional. A Cosmi is admired not only for the way it shoots, but also for the way it opens, the way it feels in the hands and the way its mechanics reveal the intelligence of its design. It is a firearm with a soul, a product in which engineering and craftsmanship are inseparable.
Today, nearly a century after the presentation of its first prototype, the Cosmi semi-automatic remains one of the rarest and most fascinating shotguns in the world. It does not follow fashion, because it was never born from fashion. It was born from vision, necessity and genius. A Cosmi is not simply a shotgun made in Italy. It is a piece of Italian history, a technical idea transformed into art, and the product that made the name Cosmi legendary.
How did your journey with Cosmi begin?
My journey with Cosmi began around seven years ago, through passion: a passion for fine firearms, mechanical excellence and objects that are not simply produced, but created with a soul.
When I had the opportunity to become involved with Cosmi, I immediately understood that this was not just another firearms company. Cosmi is a unique name in the history of gunmaking, with a very strong identity, an extraordinary technical heritage and a product that has remained truly distinctive for almost a century.
For me, taking responsibility for Cosmi meant protecting an important piece of Italian gunmaking history while giving it a future. It was not only a business decision, but a personal challenge: to preserve something rare and authentic and bring it into a new phase of growth.
What makes Cosmi truly unique compared to other firearm manufacturers?
Cosmi is unique because it has never followed the ordinary path. The original Cosmi semi-automatic shotgun is a mechanical masterpiece: elegant, complex, refined and instantly recognisable.
Many manufacturers produce excellent firearms, but very few have created a concept that is immediately identifiable as their own. A Cosmi is not simply a shotgun with a name engraved on it. Its architecture, opening system, balance, finishing and personality all speak the same language.
What makes Cosmi special is the combination of engineering, tradition and individuality. It is a firearm, but also a piece of mechanical art.
Cosmi represents craftsmanship and heritage – how do you preserve these values while also innovating?

Innovation must never betray tradition. For us, innovation means respecting the DNA of Cosmi while using modern tools and modern thinking to improve the product.
We preserve craftsmanship by keeping the human element at the centre of our work: hand fitting, hand finishing, engraving, attention to detail and a very close relationship with each individual gun. These are not decorative values; they are part of the real quality of the product.
At the same time, we are investing in design, engineering and technical development. The challenge is to move forward without losing the soul of the gun. A Cosmi must always feel like a Cosmi, even when it represents something new.
Who is the typical Cosmi client?
The typical Cosmi client is not simply looking for a shotgun. He is usually someone who already understands quality, tradition and exclusivity.
Our clients are hunters, collectors, passionate shooters and people who appreciate fine mechanical objects. They do not want something ordinary or mass-produced. They are looking for a gun with identity, character and a story behind it.
A Cosmi client values performance, of course, but also emotion. He wants to own something that represents taste, culture and personal distinction.
What does luxury mean to you in the context of firearms?
In firearms, luxury is not only about price, gold or decoration. True luxury is much deeper.
Luxury means time: the time required to design correctly, machine precisely, finish by hand, check every detail and refuse compromises.
Luxury also means authenticity. A firearm must have real substance: mechanical quality, balance, reliability, beauty and identity. Decoration without substance is not luxury; it is only appearance.
For me, luxury in a firearm is when performance, craftsmanship and emotion come together. It is when the owner feels that the gun was not simply produced, but created with care, intelligence and respect.
Are there any upcoming projects or directions you can share with us?
Yes, this is a very important moment for Cosmi. This spring, we are presenting the CosmiCento, our sporting over-and-under shotgun, and for us it represents much more than a new model. It marks the strong entrance of Cosmi into the world of sporting shotguns.
Cosmi has always been known for its iconic semi-automatic shotgun, with a unique mechanical identity. With the CosmiCento, we are bringing that same philosophy into the sporting segment: not by copying what already exists, but by creating an over-and-under with a true Cosmi identity.
The CosmiCento has been developed through modern engineering studies, technical analysis and extensive field testing. Balance, weight distribution, handling, recoil perception, stability and shooting comfort have all been studied with performance in mind. It is a gun created for sport, for shooters who demand consistency, control and confidence over many rounds.
At the same time, it remains a Cosmi: refined mechanics, Italian craftsmanship, attention to detail and the possibility of creating something personal and distinctive. The goal was not simply to make a beautiful gun, but to create a sporting shotgun with real technical substance and a strong personality.
The name Cento also has a special meaning, because 2026 marks the centenary of Cosmi, founded in 1926. So this model is both a tribute to our first hundred years and the beginning of a new chapter.
Our direction is clear: to strengthen Cosmi internationally, enter the sporting market with credibility and ambition, and position the brand among the most distinctive and prestigious names in the world of fine firearms.
Our goal is not to become the biggest. Our goal is to remain rare, authentic and unmistakably Cosmi.
